Plant development, somatic mutation and evolution: how being big is different*

Plants grow via a diffuse developmental system very different from those used by nearly all animals.  Plant bodies can reach extremes of size and age, but this flexibility comes at a cost: plant gametes can easily transmit de novo somatic mutations accumulated during growth. This possibility has long been appreciated, only recently have theory and data appeared which help us predict and understand its consequences.
